CHAPTER 16

THE CALL

Mendoza had just showered and dressed after the long drive back from Oklahoma. He and Francine were about to prepare tea and sit out on the front porch when the phone rang. He tightened his diamond cuff link and picked up the phone. “Cernigliaro residence. Mendoza speaking,” he said as he checked his appearance in the dresser mirror.

“The Boss says for you to come to headquarters—alone.” the voice on the other end stated dryly.

“What? Now?”

“Not now. In two hours. When the sun goes down.”

“Okay, umm. Okay, I’ll be there.”

“You have no choice,” the man said before he hung up the phone abruptly.

Mendoza had an immediate sinking feeling in his stomach as he set the phone back down into its port and headed downstairs knowing he’d seen this move a time or two.

Sam Giancana, Sonny Black, Roy DeMeo, “Mad Sam” DeStefano—all were powerful mafia figures that had received ‘the call’ in one form or another and they never saw the light of day again. Mendoza had even made ‘the call’ a few times in his career, but on this day, he’d just gotten the call and it unnerved him greatly because he knew it was a strong chance that he may not leave Eastside Bar alive. Right away he knew that somehow, Zell must have found about the hit against him and was aiming to strike first.

“Everything okay, baby?” Francine asked as she walked into the living room holding a tray with a tea kettle and two ceramic cups.

“Yeah. Every, everything is fine. Look,” Mendoza said as he removed his wedding ring and placed it on the table, he then removed his wallet and pulled out his driver’s license, “I have to look into something for a minute. I’ll be back tonight.”

“What about the tea?”

“Save it.” Mendoza said as he put on a pretentious smile.

Francine wasn’t fooled in the least, however; she knew something was going on with her husband and she wanted answers. “Mendoza who was that on the phone? What’s going on?” she asked anxiously.

“Nothing I can talk about. I have to go and see DeeDee.”

“Are you coming back?” Francine asked worriedly.

Mendoza, as he reached for the door knob, looked down towards the floor and said lowly, “I honestly don’t know, Francine.”

“Mendoza,” Francine cried as she set the tray down and ran and grabbed her husband. “Mendoza what happened?”

“Nothing I can’t fix. I’ll be okay. If you don’t hear from me in a couple of day’s time,” Mendoza paused at that moment and thought about how sudden lives could change in the business. “I never thought I’d be betrayed by one of my own.”

“Who betrayed you?”

“DeeDee.”

“You’re wrong! Mendoza, you’re wrong! Doss is your friend!”

“You know as well as I do Francine, that in this business, friends are the ones who do you in. If I’m not heard from in two day’s time, you have Lucky and Junior go after Doss. He’ll come looking for me when he finds out I’m the one who killed his father.” Mendoza said as he walked out the door, leaving behind a stunned Francine.
